Originally titled “She Was Lovin' Me” and recorded in 1999 for Jackson’s tenth album, Invincible, but was later scrapped. Shortly after Jackson’s death, the track was heavily considered and mixed by Jackson’s nephew, Taryll Jackson, for 2010’s Michael, Jackson’s first posthumous album, but was cut a second time. Years later, the track eventually appeared on Jackson’s second posthumous album, Xscape, with updated production by Timbaland and J-Roc. According to CNN, “Jackson recorded "Chicago” at The Hit Factory in New York City after songwriter Cory Rooney sent him a scratch demo in 1999, when Jackson was working on his “Invincible” album. Jackson “fell in love with it” the first time he heard the demo, according to the liner notes."
